Xyla smiled as she climbed up the drawers to the counter. Almost there and one of those big, juicy fuzzy-apple-things would be hers! She had been eyeing them the last three days and now the big was finally gone! "Left hand, right foot, right hand, left foot, just keep going, almost there!" She mentally sang to herself as she scaled the carved design on the cupboard. Ohh, it was almost in reach, just climb over the edge and *click*. Xyla froze. She slowly looked over her right shoulder and at the turning lock on the main door, uh-oh.

Xyla panicked Why was he home so early? gah, no time for that, up or down? She decided up and hauled herself up onto the counter and sprinted around behind the fruit bowl just as the door started to open. She heard the big step inside and close the door behind him before taking off his boots. What was he doing home? The little thought back to her teacher’s words, “no matter how long you may watch them, no matter how well you think you know them, NEVER get comfortable with a big. Always be prepared for them to come back in to get something they forgot, to come home early or stay home sick. And most important of all, NEVER reveal yourself lest the erasers come for you!” The thought of the “erasers” made her knees shake. They’re the ones that make the “evidence” disappear if a little is ever caught. The big’s foot steps stopped and Xyla risked a quick peek around the edge of the bowl.

The big was standing in the middle of the kitchen looking at his little light up square thingy. How long would it distract him? would Xyla have enough time to get away? The big twitched his thumb and the little ducked back behind the fruit bowl, she recognized the gesture that would turn of the little box thingy, “gosh,” he said to himself with a sigh, “Nothing to do and all day to do it. Sometimes I really hate holidays.” It wasn’t abnormal for the big to carry on conversations with himself, Xyla had noticed, “at least offical ones, nothings open, the range, the shop. not even V&VI’s is open so I can’t get any new games.” he started walking again, sounded to Xyla like he was moving towards the fridge, “this is why I should make the jump to PC, digital downloads, I make enough money to support the hardware costs... I dunno though, there’s something about coming home, plopping down on the couch and reclining with a controller in your hand.” He opened the a door on the fridge, by the humming sound it was probably the freezer, “gotta feed Marty today”

Beads of cold sweat ran down Xyla’s body, if she was caught before he fed his snake, would she be fed to it? He seemed like a decent guy, but no matter how well you think you know you’re big you always have to remember that they are the death and To be honest, she didn’t think she knew him very well any way. did he do anything for fun other than those electronic games of his? does he have any friends? family? what does he do for a living? heck, what does his face look like? He always wore sunglasses and concealed his lower face under a mask or folded and tied piece of cloth.

Xyla could see his hands as he set three small frozen bundles of fur out on the counter. The sight of them made her shiver; frozen mice, just thaw and they’re ready to eat... creepy. at least he didn’t feed it live mice though, that was something. She hadn’t ever actually seen the snake... actually she wasn’t entirely sure it was a snake. She had asked one of her friends about it and apparently there are things called monitor lizards that can grow so big that people just give them a spare room rather than a cage, if that was true then she didn’t want to go snooping about the guest bedrooms of which there were two.

With her eyes momentarily fixed on the dead rodents, Xyla was caught totally by surprise when the big stepped up to the sink to wash his hands, leaving her in view. she quickly scooted around the side but it would seem it was too late, “huh? what was... nah, that would be silly, their frozen... and dead... probably should have listed those in the opposite order.” he chuckled to himself. Too close for comfort, “zombie rodents aside, I think there might be a pest problem...I don’t really care if mice move in, but if they were traced back to my apartment that would be quite a fee” or not

Xyla dashed for the edge of the counter, her teacher had taught her that even though it might be scary, littles can’t break bones or rupture insides from a fall. she tucked and rolled off the counter, just go fast enough and stay low enough to the ground and he’ll think it was just a mouse. It’s not like he could catch her like this any wa-. Xyla’s eyes widened as a hand closed around her mid fall, she never knew her big was so coordinated! oh no, this is the end! she screwed her eyes shut and awaited the pain as she was raised. She risked a quick peek to see him sliding a knife from his belt, oh no, she was going to be cut open just like those frogs teacher warned them about!

*shunk* *shunk* *shunk* Xyla could hear him sharpening it and squeezed her eyes shut even harder as his grip loosened, please let it be over quick!

“here,” the big spoke in a distinctly non-threatening voice

Xyla risked opening an eye to find the knife sitting on the counter next to one of the fuzzy-apple-things that was cut up into wedges. One of the wedges was missing an end and Xyla looked to the big to find him offering it to her, “you were after one of these, right?”

Xyla hesitantly nodded and took the juicy fruit from him, a last meal? she bit into it and couldn’t help her eyes widening at the delicious flavor, so sweet!

“I had no idea that there were things like you here” the big said casually behind his mask,”reminds me of...nah, doesn't matter.” he shook his head, “did you enjoy the peach?”

Peach? is that what the fuzzy-apple-thing was? Xyla nodded

“Good, but I have to ask, was it worth all the trouble of climbing up and trying to sneak around?”

Xyla opened and closed her mouth as she tried to work out what the right answer was, there was a right answer, right? would he just kill her either way?

“ahh... that explains it, you’re scared of me... you think I’ll do something bad to you, don’t you?” he cocked his head to the side, “dissect you, sell you to a pharmaceutical corporation, give you to the government maybe? nah, I won’t do any of that”

“d-does that mean that you’re going to feed me to y-your pet?” Xyla stammered before she could stop herself

“Pet? oh, you mean Marty? no, I wouldn’t do that.” he sighed and picked up the knife from the counter, it took all of Xyla’s willpower not to let her teeth chatter. Rather than cut her, however, he cut off another piece of the fruit wedge and gave it to her, “any way, I prefer you asking me to just taking things... though, I doubt you would take too much”

To her surprise, the big set her down on the counter next to the peach and leaned against the counter with a sigh, “gah, I wish I could microwave the stupid mice” he grumbled to himself

Xyla shuddered as she recalled the pictures they were shown of what happened to a little that had been microwaved.

The big laughed, “no, I won’t microwave you. What? I noticed the shiver. oh, my name is Victor, by the way.”

“m-my name is Xyla” was that the right thing to do? should she introduce herself and risk the erasers or not and risk annoying him?

“you can relax, you know. I’m really not going to hurt you, that would be distinctly against my profession as a Peace Officer.”

What’s a peace officer? More importantly, was he lying? she couldn't tell through the sunglasses.

“It’s because of the shades and bandanna, isn’t it?” Victor sighed, “I have some nerve damage in my face from a... spider bite, and it can make my face twist into rather unsettling expressions.”

   “oh,” she had no idea.

“now, what to do with you.” Victor chuckled to himself, “I really shouldn’t just let you run around taking things without asking. I understand that you’re just trying to scratch out a living, however... so what to do” he thought to himself for a moment, “Do you go any of the other apartments?”

Xyla shook her head, the more Bigs you had to keep track of the harder it got to keep from getting caught.

“good, I’d hate to think what would happen of Mrs.Hunnagan’s cat caught you... or the Conroys’ kid... Yeah, it’s definitely best for you to stay here, but from now ask me for anything you need, don’t just take it. no matter how small, ok?”

   Xyla nodded nervously

“you’re not just agreeing because you're scared, are you?”

   she shook her head

“good, now if you don’t want any more peach I think these mice should be about thawed.” Victor turned and picked all three of them up by their tails and walked off to one of the spare rooms.

Xyla hurried down the counter and ran as fast as she could back to her home hidden behind a removable section of the baseboard and sank down against a wall, panting for breath. after a minute to calm herself, she stood and walked to her bed and plopped down with a sigh, what was she going to, “oh my god” Xyla went pale, a small note was stuck to her ceiling above her bed, it read ‘mistakes have been made’  and was signed with the eraser’s seal.
